Other progress made recently includes painting of the windscreens surround, we have gone for black on this to try and tone down the green a bit.  and just to check we popped the other bits of the body on to see the shape of things to come.

We have also made up 2 repairs for the rear 1/4 panels of the tub, the bottoms of them have corroded so we have made up some repairs based on the templates for car 2.

So busy times ahead working on the car hopefully will have it further along in no time.

Car 1 : Paint Starting

Car 1 is slowly moving forward!! We recently posted that we were aiming for the car to be running by the 20th november, however due to holidays and the lack of a bank balance, this plan backfired. But we have been doing work on the bulkhead, 30 spot welds later the old feet eventually came out and the new feet have been welded in, so jobs for this car now are to prime and paint the bulkhead and mount it onto the chassis, we also have the dreaded task of searching for all the bits again now!!!

Bulkhead has had its first coat of primer today, the new green will be added tomorrow….. I have took a photo of the can… Very exciting!!!!!

Car 4 : Light Improvements

This week after taking the car out at night on empty roads we realised how bad the lighting is for driving, so decided that wiring additional lights was a priority.

A light bar that had previously been fitted to car 2 was rubbed down and painted to match the colour scheme and bolted on the roof.

An afternoon of wiring later the lights were all wired up and working.  This should help when on empty roads at night.

Car 1 : Engine rebuilding

Well some parts have come in for car 1, the following bits have been bolted on to the engine.

  • Fuel lift pump & filter
  • Coil, Distributor cap, HT Leads
  • Belts

Also the clutch, bulkhead feet, bulkhead repair panels are all ready to be fitted.

The progress on the car should move ahead pretty quickly now.

A target has been set for the vehicle to start and move by the 20th November so pushing hard for that.

Update

Well its all been a bit quiet the last couple of weeks between the injury and holidays so here is where we are up to.

Car 1 – hasn’t really changed since the engine was put in, busy looking for a clutch and other parts.

Car 2 – hasn’t changed since the engine and gearbox were refitted but will soon be getting back in to the swing and looking to put in brake lines, fuel lines and tank. Then bolt the bulkhead in to position. We will also be moving on to make the rear window sections for the body work over the next couple of weeks, then we can start spraying up the parts ready to go back on.

Car 3 – this car is now mostly dismantled and the engine and gearbox up for sale.

Car 4 – After repairing the rear diff pan, a couple of weeks ago after about an hours trip one of the core plugs decided to fail. it was replaced and again a couple of weeks later blew out again. Decision was made to replace the head gasket so this weekend was spent stripping it down, tonight we will fit the new gasket and bolt it all up again. Hopefully that will sort the issues out.

New addition to the group!

One of the other friends got a bit of the land rover bug after owning a discovery for a little while so he has now invested in a Series 3 pickup truck which is very nice, needs a little bit of work but its a runner for now.

Bank Holiday Bumper Update

First things first, due to computer being a bit of a pain the photos will follow shortly.

Well what a bank holiday weekend it has been, first one this year where we have actually had both cars to work on. Plus maybe a couple of side projects.

So here is the update.

Car 1 :

Well after a bit of time with little progress this weekend has been a big jump. Most of the delays have been down to the issue with the bushes we last reported in the poly bushes being too short and a gap being in the chassis. So new bushes were purchased and then on Saturday using a fly press pushed them in to the axles and chassis.

20130826-225453.jpgAfter noticing a bit of weakness in the rear cross member welding we decided to weld in some plates to strengthen the mount, so some grinding and welding later we are happy its stronger.

20130826-225447.jpg

So the paint was touched up and the axles all bolted to the chassis hopefully for the last time.

Next up the engine came back to the build location after a checking over, a quick coat of green paint it was mounted back to the chassis along with the fuel tank.

20130826-225514.jpg

Also trial fitted the bulkhead and wings from car 2.

Car 2 :

Well this week we have removed all the last bits from the old chassis, the last bits off were the A Frame and brackets, these were heavily rusted so required grinding off.

A number of parts were removed so they could go for shot blasting before refitting, these parts are :

  • 2 x Radius Arms
  • 2 x Trailing Arms
  • 2 x A Frame Arms
  • 2 x A Frame Chassis Brackets
  • 2 x Top Rear Shock Mounts
  • Panhard Rod
  • Fuel Tank front bracket

These will hopefully be in Tuesday morning and back this week.

The axles for the car were also rubbed down and primed ready for painting before they go back on hopefully before the weekend.

While the axles were dry and not yet bolted to the car we decided to change the bearings and brake disks. Again the fly press helped pushing the bearings in to place and in the day the rear axle was done, just the front to do now.

Car 3 :

After a bit of work this project has been put on hold for now and may be scrapped in the future, we shall see.

Car 4 :

A silver 300 tdi disco, this is a normal road car for one of the lads, after smashing a rear diff earlier this year a replacement pan was welded in to place but had always had a little leak as it was welded in place, so as the weather was nice we decided to remove the axle and weld in the garage.

After trying we found it still leaked so the axle is still off for now so this will be on going for now.

Car 5 :

Well car 5 strictly shouldn’t appear on the blog as its not a Land Rover and the owner doesn’t have a Land Rover but he is one of the group of friends so we are putting it on.

The car is a Toyota Celica Race car that is a just starting project, There is no clear direction yet but we shall update the blog with more information. This weekend no work was done, but we did sell a spare set of wheels that came with the car so all good for now.

Car 1 : Progress this week

Well, a productive week for the story of car 1, including the collection of a whole load of parts won on ebay from over the river in Liverpool and the eventual purchase of the bush kit.

After seeing the item on ebay a whole load of parts in pictures the item was won so on Wednesday we went off to collect, and we were surprised by how much stuff there was. Here are a couple of pictures:

Items of note include a front axle with free wheeling hubs, 4 windscreens, 2 rear screen sections and a whole lot more

The next big job was bush replacement, we were starting with the chassis bushes, so out with a home made puller, a good length of M10 stud iron, nuts, washers and length of scaffold tube. after a few hours we had the inner tubes and rubber out, just the outer metal tube remained. with the use of a hacksaw, chisels and hammers they were soon out too. Then it was in with the new britpart polybush kit.

Progress from the last week

Well a little bit of a quiet week on the work front, here is a bit of an update:

Car 1 – Chassis is having its second coat of paint now, will be turning it over tomorrow and doing the bottom.

Thanks to the sale of the 2.5 Diesel that came with the chassis we have been able to buy the bush kit so that will be the aim for the next week.

Car 2 – We have removed the bulkhead to assess the wiring and also some rust repairs that will be required.

Rear tub cross members arrived from Paddocks, they have had their paint removed and are set to go to galvanising soon.

2 x 10 x 5 Sheets of 1.5mm ali have been ordered to remake the rear body work so we will be starting to cut them out in the next week and be ready to make up the tub and side sections hopefully before the chassis arrives.

Also ordered is a load wiring from Vehicle Wiring Products so there is a big job looming.

Car 3 – A sheet has been trimmed down that will cover part of the cab which is one of the first jobs to do, then decisions on the way to go.

Car 1 : Chassis Painting

Well today we have had the axles off the chassis and started to give it the first coat of chassis black paint.

So unbolted the springs and moved chassis in to the garage and out with the brushes and rollers.

The first coat looks good, still the underside to paint and then a second coat and will be done ready for the engine and boxes to go back in.
